Disaster Project Documents

These first two links are the project calendar and rubric.  You'll want to download a copy of the rubric and make sure you know what the project expectations are. I've also included the entry document for your reference, so you know what the individual components are, and what information is required.

Introduction to Plate Tectonics

Presentation on Plate Tectonics

The following four files are part of the same activity. You will need all four in order to complete the assignment.

World Map

There are a series of three evidence labs that look at heat flow data gathered during the 1960s. The evidence is analyzed by the students, who will then use it to support or refute the theory of plate tectonics.

Activity 1- Heat Flow at Ridges (started in class, finish the data tables for homework.  We'll discuss the conclusions Tuesday in class)

Writing prompt for your in-class essay.

A summary of the text:

In-class essay- Plate Tectonics Conclusions

In-class essay- you will be writing a discussion/conclusion to the following hypothesis. You are expected to cite data from class to defend your conclusions supporting or refuting the hypothesis.

Hypothesis:

If tectonic plates move by the mechanism of sea-floor spreading, then heat flow values will vary in different regions of the lithosphere.

Similarly, if an island chain has been formed by a tectonic plate moving over a hot spot, then the islands will be arranged by increasing age.

Use the following focus questions to help you prepare:

What are plate tectonics and sea-floor spreading?

What is the relationship between sea-floor spreading and plate tectonics?

How do heat flow patterns in the lithosphere provide evidence for this relationship between sea-floor spreading and plate tectonics?

What other evidence has been presented that supports the theory of plate tectonics?
